On Sunday 22nd September we welcomed back Sensei Garry Harford 7th Dan KUGB to York Elite. Sensei Harford held a superb 2 hour training course for Dan Grades and 1st Kyus in the morning which focussed mainly on kumite techniques. Working with partners on leg speed, reaction timing and dynamic striking techniques, this was a masterclass in the fighting art.

Sensei Harford then held an extended training class for our Kyu Grades working on the detail of basic kihon and kata techniques before grading 39 of our students. We had some strong gradings and are delighted with the performance of all of our members who graded below:

On Sunday 23rd June, York Elite sent a 20 strong team to The 4th Sunderland Championships: Fraser Grice, Sammi King, Connor Dunckley, Rosa Kerr, Cayleigh McCartney, Julia Coatesworth, Joseph and Oliver Lines, James McNichol, Liam Hampton, Cei and Kade Reynolds, Harvey and Mackenzie Hunter, Sam and Ellie Blundell, Carly and Cameron Pringle, Zosia Johnson, and Jed Weston.

For two of the team, Jed and Ellie, this was their first taste of competition, and both can be very proud of their performances. The others, whilst very youthful, are becoming seasoned campaigners, and what a stunning day they had! The team demonstrated the skill, grit, bravery and fighting spirit that is a huge credit to them, their family, and their instructors.

Members of York Elite came home with 3 champions, and 5 bronze medals. There were many other great performances in the elimination rounds too.

All but 1 of the medals were won in kumite events. Carly won the 10 years and under girls category, without ever looking troubled. A stunning display. She also had the biggest grin of the day.

There was strong representation in the 10 years and under boys event. Sam had 3 very short fights to get to the semi final, winning with ippon each time, before eventually losing to Oliver. A well earned bronze for Sam. Oliver’s hardest fights had been against his own club mates in the elimination rounds. He comfortably won the final, with his best display of the day.

Liam looked sharp throughout to win the boys 11 – 14 under 5ft event, a worthy champion. Fraser and Sammi both added bronze medals to their already substantial collections. Both were sharp; how Sammi didn’t win her semi-final will long remain a mystery! This competition had an under 16 mixed team kumite event, with Sammi, Joseph and James fighting, with Liam reserve. The team fought hard and well, to get bronze in a tough event.

In the kata events, Rosa’s stylish Jion won 3rd in the under 16 black belt group. Two teams were entered in the mixed team kata, York Elite A comprised Rosa, Cayleigh and Julia; York Elite B Connor, Carly, and Oliver. Both teams reached the semi-final stage and just missed out on the finals by a whisker, with the finalists largely consisting of adults, and England squad members. York Elite B were understandably proud of finishing higher than the A team!

Overall a very enjoyable and very successful day. As always these events rely on the fantastic support of parents. The York Elite team were very vocal in their support, With Katie McNichol winning ‘whooper of the day’.

Check out our Facebook page for pictures on the day.

On Sunday we welcomed Sensei Frank Brennan 7th Dan KUGB to York Elite. There had been a lot of excitement and anticipation leading up to the day and Sensei Brennan did not disappoint with a truly inspiring demonstration of Karate.

We started the day with a Senior class for Dan Grades and 1st Kyu Adults which included friends from clubs in Leeds and Selby (and Liverpool!). Sensei Brennan worked through a series of blocks, kicks and punches in various combinations with incredibly precise, dynamic and strong techniques focusing on speed and kime. Working with partners we then applied these techniques in Jyu Kumite. Sensei Brennan finished this session with a short masterclass on Bassai Sho.

The next class was for the under 14 Dan Grades and 1st Kyus who were treated to the same level of intensity working through their basics and kumite focusing on speed, technique and good attitude. Sensei Brennan concluded this class with another kata masterclass this time on Jion and Bassai Dai for the 1st Kyus.

After a short break Sensei Brennan then held a training class for Kyu Grades followed by a grading for 40 students. Despite many of the students being quite young and a little in awe of the day, Sensei Brennan displayed a mastery of explaining the correct technique to all levels commanding respect from every karate-ka in the class. Congratulations on successful Kyu Grade training and grading go to:

Nathaniel Clements, Paul Driscoll, Daniel Glover, Gracie Kilner, Mason Kilner, Ruby Mason, Fay Osswald, Isobel Shoffren, Gaudi Trepel, Bryn Wade, Philip Dawson, Nicole Dransfield, Sophie Fowler, Thomas Howell, Jack Nelson, Abbie Samuels, Ellie Blundell, Dominic Dawson, John Dawson, Sue Driscoll, Hugh Fowler, Eleanor Poels, Matthew Poels, Rachel Poels, Giuseppe Reynolds, Fabiola Rimkuss, Niamh Clements, Joshua Dagwell, Aleksander Lazarov, Daniel Maltby, Madoc Wade, Ben Wedge, Charlotte Lines, Ruth Reynolds, Aaron Clements, Peter Lazarov, James Tattersall, Marcus Burgess, Harvey Morrison, Gabi Sanderson

We were thrilled to host Sensei Brennan for the day and feedback from everyone who attended, karate-ka and friends and parents alike, has been superb. We look forward to his next visit and want to extend our thanks and appreciation for a fantastic day. Oss Sensei!
